Years 5 & 6

Key Stage 2 is broken down into Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2. Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) are streamed by ability in Literacy and Maths. We also operate a ‘Nurture Group’ for some periods of the day to support those children who need to be taught in smaller groups or need a personalised curriculum.

Phonics is continued for those children that require it, but once they can decode, they move onto our Accelerated Reader Scheme. Children read at home and at School and then complete a quiz to test their understanding.

In Year 6 children complete their SAT’s in Reading, Writing, Spelling and Grammar in the Summer Term.

Children in Y5 and Y6 are also offered a two-night residential in London/Ullswater.

All children in Y5 and Y6 have a 1-1 iPad to help support them with their learning.

Children all get the opportunity for Enrichment which take place on a weekly basis. Our PSHE Scheme is complimented through our assembly programme which teaches our children about British Values, global citizenship and the protected characteristics through stories. This is then then discussed in detail in the classroom at an appropriate level specific to their year group.
